OUR BREWERY TEAM
Josh King- Our humble Head Brewer. He has been handcrafting Sockeye beer since its beginning and he is the man behind the Sockeye beer we all love today. He has produced a wide variety of award winning styles over the years and has deep loyalty to our brewing community. He has been involved in Idaho craft beer since Sockeye started in 1996, hosting BJCP events, Snake River Homebrewer meetings and collaboration brew days, and even hosted the very first session of what is now our states first brewers guild, Idaho Brewers United. He has apprenticed many fellow professional brewers, supported numerous local events contributing barrels and barrels of outstanding craft beers, and has always shared ingredients and recipes to promote and support the growth of our Idaho craft beer industry. In the first ten years at Sockeye, Josh’s two man crew somehow managed to brew, package and distribute our flagship Dagger Falls IPA with rising demand, until it was clear growth was eminent and the time had come for more tanks and more hands on deck. He helped offer every Idahoan fresh, high quality beers made from northwestern growers to every region in our state in an eco-responsible way. His hard work and dedication are why we’re all here serving and sharing pints of Idaho’s #1 selling beer brand. His hard work is our reward. Cheers, Josh… and thank you!
Production Brewery Manager/Brewer.
Kevin was born and raised in Grand Rapids, Michigan and began home brewing soon after experiencing the full flavors of micro beers in the late 1980’s. He ventured West shortly after, and although he still has strong ties to the great lakes state (and of course all their sports teams!) he has become staunchly loyal to our Idaho craft beer industry. His professional brewing began in Boise in 1996 and he has since been recognized locally and nationally for numerous medals and craft beer event promotions. He has helped develop our Idaho beer scene over the years, training and sharing ingredients and knowledge at every level. He helps our team reflect the knowledge of others he has connected with in the industry, teaching a multitude of brewing techniques, sensory analysis training, and proper standard operating procedures for equipment and brewing processes. He is our engineer-of-sorts with skills that ensure proper maintenance and efficiency of our equipment. He is a firm believer in sharing information to continue growing the craft beer industry in our region, and was instrumental in founding Idaho’s first professional brewer’s guild (Idaho Brewers United) where he currently serves as Treasurer.
Cory Walz- Is originally from Eugene Oregon and of course, is a huge Ducks fan. He has been living here in Boise for 8 years and has been working in the brewery as an apprentice for years. He is the newest brewer on our team and is now enjoying the professional pleasure of making batches of our great brew from start to finish. He is still connected to our pub and you can stop in and talk brew news with him as he bartends most Saturday nights (until we shake him from that last pub shift!). He’s been a lover of craft beers for fifteen years and enjoys drinking them as much as he enjoys eating… a lot. He is an avid rafter, mountain biker, and loves long walks on the beach. His favorite place to be is in the mountains or of course, on the river. His hope for the future of Sockeye is for us to continue to grow and to reach more beer lovers everywhere.
Tim is an experienced brewer home grown right here in Boise. Tim was born in West Germany while his father was in the Army, but moved to the Blackfoot/Idaho Falls area at a very early age and remained there throughout his childhood. He is a proud Vandal, graduating from University of Idaho. In 1993, Tim moved to Boise and tipped back his first micro beer at TableRock Brew Pub on New Years’ Day. He was hooked, started working there soon after, and eventually began brewing professionally in 1998. Tim enjoys golfing, the Boston Bruins, and also loves the Red Sox, which explains why his favorite place to be is Fenway Park. He loves spending time watching sports with his wife and getting out there to catch a game in the stands.
Tim is excited to catch the wave of continued growth with us here at Sockeye Brewing. After a bottling venture with his previous brewery, he’s ready to be canning the great beers we make, and is eager to watch Sockeye’s production success rise. He sees unique brews in the future, including a desire for sours, barrel aging and limited runs on creatively handcrafted ales and lagers. Tim has finally found the perfect place to develop this skill, and now leads our barrel aging and specialty keg program, and contributes greatly in the making of truly creative and exceptional beers for Sockeye!
Paul was born in Philly, but grew up here in Boise, Idaho from a very early age. After he graduated from Boise High, Paul moved to Colorado in1990 and began brewing with Breckenridge. Over the years, Paul has developed a seasoned professional knowledge of craft brewing, and we are ecstatic to have him join our superb Brew Crew. Paul remembers drinking his first craft beer from bottles right out of Caldwell from Idaho’s original Snake River Brewing. He recalls they used to print the batch numbers on the bottles, and he used to grab a six-pack form the Boise Co-op when it was still on Hill Road. How’s that for a throw back! He brings many years of experience and knowledge to Sockeye with a long list of award winning beers from his experience in the craft beer wold. He leads our Quality Analysis and Safety program and is instrumental in training our crew. Paul adds amazing skill and knowledge to Sockeye Brewing unmatched in Idaho.
Paul’s favorite things are camping and hanging with his family, snowboarding, and enjoying the great outdoors. His favorite place to be is up at Bogus Basin with a board on his feet and a brew in his hand. He’s been trying to make his way back to Boise with his wife and two sons and Sockeye is overjoyed to be able to offer his family this opportunity. He is looking forward to seeing Sockeye Brewing grow as a force in the Northwestern region of this great USA, and to be known beyond our borders as Idaho’s Beer.
